Welcome to Stonehouse Tennis Club. We really mean it.
What we are:
We’re a private social club open to the whole of the Stonehouse community. And we’re not just about the tennis. We’re a community hub that offers those who want it the opportunity to play tennis, among much else.
We’re funded entirely by membership fees and fund-raising events. The club is run by an enthusiastic committee of unpaid, elected volunteers.
The club’s land is leased from the Lord Edgcumbe estate. Almost one hundred years ago, the then Lord Edgcumbe offered the grounds of his winter villa to the local community at a generously reduced rent.
The club is inclusive, not exclusive. A connection to Stonehouse is all you need to be eligible for membership.
Our much loved ‘secret garden’ has everything you need for an enjoyable afternoon outdoors: grass tennis courts, croquet lawn; beautiful, well kept gardens; games and toys for children and children at heart!
It’s an ‘oasis of quiet’ hidden among a city’s pavements; a very special place overlooking, arguably, one of the best views in Britain.
Our philosophy is simple…‘It’s not just about the tennis’.
As a not-for-profit club, we aim to provide the local community with sport and leisure amenities and so enhance a sense of neighbourhood unity and friendship whilst providing a place of tranquility, beauty and ownership for club members and their guests.
At Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club, you will be able to enhance your wellbeing and enjoy the company of family and friends. There is something for all the community to enjoy; lawn tennis, croquet, boules, dance, art, music, cookery and fitness classes. You will be able to attend barbecues and summer fun days, winter indoor talks, year-round gardening for all the family, Tuesday evening summer socials, picnics and story-times for little ones and access to a toyshed bursting with resources.
New friends, companionship, a warm sense of community and belonging come at no extra charge. If you are new to the city or seeking a new circle of friends or a place of tranquility to enhance your wellbeing, please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of our friendly team. We will be delighted to welcome you.
Ok, we’re not exactly talking ‘Centre Court at Wimbledon’ here, but we can offer members, on the lower lawn, two of the last full-size grass tennis courts in Plymouth. No need for ‘tennis whites’, but please wear suitable training shoes on the courts. Look out for tennis socials for adults and subsidised children’s coaching during the summer season. A variety of racquets and balls are kept in the toyshed beside the clubhouse. (Shed key can be found on the clubhouse noticeboard). No one to play with? Please let us know on the Facebook group so that we can set up some friendly games /socials. Please direct all enquiries and ideas for tennis development to Fauzi at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Weather-permitting, it’s a summertime Tuesday evening feature on the top lawn. Join in, or just sit back with a glass in your hand. Beginners very welcome. People gather from 5pm for a 6pm game.
Balls, hoops and mallets are stored in the toy shed, should you wish to enjoy a game when visiting.
(That French game where you stand on the spot and try to throw weighted steel balls closest to the ‘conchonnet’ or ‘Jack’). It’s not as easy as it looks!
We have recently-improved single 25 metre pitch on the western end of the top lawn. Steel balls and ‘conchonnet’ are kept in the toy shed. ‘Bonne Chance!’
